Water being poured into a glass

When you hear about people filtering their water, you might think that it only happens in third-world countries where people don’t have access to clean water. However, no matter where you live in the world, it is important to make sure that you are drinking clean water. Even in first-world countries, there are contaminants in the water that gets piped into residential areas. Here are a few of the common contaminants that might be in your water that you should be aware of.

Microorganisms

There are lots of different types of microorganisms, such as viruses or bacteria, that could be in your unfiltered water. The consumption of microorganisms can lead to infection, illness, and disease. For many years, the drinking water in the United States has been chemically disinfected through various methods such as chlorination to prevent the spread and outbreak of diseases caused by microorganisms. For this reason, it is possible, but unlikely that your tap water will be contaminated. However, if you live in an especially old home, draw water from a well, or are drinking water from a river or lake as your camping, you may be at risk for infection or disease. If you suspect that your water is contaminated with microorganisms, boil your water for at least one minute in order to eliminate the risk of contamination.

Heavy Metals

Another dangerous contaminant that may be in your unfiltered water is metal. There are various types of metal that are often in unfiltered water pipelines, such as lead. Consuming these metals can lead to serious illness and even death. There are various ways to treat your water so that these dangerous substances are removed. One way to remove lead from drinking water is through reverse osmosis. Make sure that you’re aware of the heavy metals that could be contaminating your water.

Chemicals

There also may be traces of chemicals in your water that could be harmful to your health. Chemicals such as Arsenic and Nitrate are commonly found in nature and therefore are found in many water sources. These chemicals can cause serious diseases and even death if they are not filtered out of your water source by the time it is consumed. It is important to report the suspected existence of these chemicals in your water so it can be taken care of and prevent future illness and disease.

Although it may be concerning to learn about all of the dangerous contaminants that may exist in your water, remember that your community is working to prevent the dangerous consequences of these contaminants. In addition, you can take your own preventative measures by using a water filter, or boiling or buying your water if you are worried that you could be at risk of contamination. As you’re careful about the water you and your loved ones drink, you’ll be providing a healthier and safer life for yourself in the future.
