    Toilet Installation Iowa City

Experts Can Handle Your Toilet Installation

The best toilet installation in Iowa City can be a somewhat challenging process if not fully understood. That’s because many steps must be taken to ensure that everything goes smoothly. Thankfully, we at Benjamin Franklin Plumbing have the skills necessary to manage this problem in a way that makes sense and which can ensure things go smoothly for your needs.

    Turn the Valves Off

When going through the toilet installation process, you need to start by turning the shutoff valve off to keep water from flowing. This step is relatively simple and doesn’t require a lot of hard work. You will need to carefully inspect your toilet area and find this valve, which is usually right near the toilet and quite easy to turn off with a twist.

However, there is a chance that your shutoff valve may be in another part of the home – usually underneath the toilet. That all depends on factors such as how the plumber installed elements such as where the plumber added the valve and why. Typically, they try to keep it as close to the toilet as possible to avoid complications.

Some people may even want to turn their water main off completely while they replace their toilet. This step isn’t necessary but can help to ensure that no excess water flow occurs. Often, people do this if they don’t want to get flooded with water if a person turns on the wrong sink, one connected to the same plumbing as the toilet.

    Take Off the Water Connection

Now that you have turned off the water supply, you can disconnect the water supply line to your toilet. This pipe is the small metal-ringed tube that goes from the main supply pipe to your toilet. Most homeowners should be able to handle this part of the process because it is reasonably straightforward. However, it is still possible to make a mistake during this step of toilet installation.

For example, many people make the mistake of keeping the pipe hooked to the toilet and taking it off the wall or supply line. This step is a problem because it can be much harder to connect it back in this way. Instead, you must take the pipe off of the toilet because this also helps you to put the toilet back in place when you are done.

Use an adjustable wrench for this part of the process and carefully remove the pipe in a way that doesn’t cause any damage. Now, you can place it up against the wall to keep it out of the way. Some may want to tie it up with a small line or a rubber band to ensure that it doesn’t get loose and cause problems while you work.

    Carefully Remove the Toilet

At this point in the toilet installation process, you are just about ready to add your new toilet. However, you need to take out the old one, if necessary, to ensure that this process goes smoothly. Start by carefully emptying the back of the toilet and the bowl of all water. Now, you can remove the bolts from the bottom of the tank that holds it to the bowl.

Carefully take the tank off of the bowl and set it to the side. Now, you can remove the bolts and nuts holding the bowl down to the ground. There is usually only a handful here, and they should be quite easy to remove. Keep them to the side or in a small bowl just in case the replacement bolts for your new toilet get stripped or broken.

Take the old toilet out of the bathroom and put it somewhere until you can throw it away or recycle it. And if your toilet is a one-piece model, you usually only have to worry about the bolts holding it down to the floor. Thankfully, this should cut your removal time down but may make removing the toilet harder.

    Finishing Up This Project

At this point, you are going to start adding your toilet to your home. First of all, you need to remove the old caulk that may end up messing up some of the toilet installation processes. All this step requires is a small putty knife that breaks apart the old caulk. Now, you can place your toilet in this area to see if it is level. It should sit smoothly on the floor without a rock.

Carefully bolt your toilet to the floor and check the tank-bowl bolts to ensure that they are connected. Tighten them, if necessary, to hold your bathroom more firmly in place. Check the flange of the toilet to make sure that it is fully connected at the bottom of the base. Use a repair ring, if needed, to make sure that your toilet is flush.

You also need to make sure to install a new wax ring, to tighten all bolts evenly, and to perform other steps that ensure your toilet is reliable and secure. There are many steps that you may miss here that are hard to cover in-depth here, such as making sure that you AVOID caulking the base because this may worsen leaks in your toilet.
